NetDiag+ 1.4.3 and 1.4.4: Arabic, right-to-left, and thirteen languages done properly
Two releases mostly about language — and about the difference between having a translation and showing it.
Arabic, and RTL
Arabic is the thirteenth language, translated in full — all 477 strings at the time — with a proper right-to-left pass through every screen rather than a mirrored layout with numbers flipping the wrong way. Latin tokens like Wi-Fi, ping, TCP and VPN stay Latin inside Arabic sentences, which is how Arabic technical writing actually reads.
Strings that bypassed the catalogue
About fifteen screens rendered text through paths that skip iOS's string catalogue — an enum's raw value, a label typed as a plain String — so they showed English on every device regardless of the translations that existed. All of them now go through the catalogue. If a screen you use in your language suddenly became your language in this release, this is why.
Small things that were wrong
- Certificate dates in the TLS tools were being rendered in the Hijri calendar on Arabic-locale devices. They are Gregorian everywhere now; a certificate's validity is a Gregorian fact.
- The app now asks for an App Store rating after a genuinely successful run, and never in the same moment as an ad.
- Aggregate usage analytics, enabled only after the consent prompt, so we can see which tools are used and which are not. Nothing leaves the phone before you answer that prompt.
